Uttarakhand Ringal Craft

Artisans create one-of-a-kind designs by skillfully blending light and dark strips of ringal bamboo. This variety of bamboo is significant both environmentally and socio-economically and is found in the rich forests in the Garhwal Himalayas.

The artform

Because of its increased water resistance, this specific type of bamboo is more suitable for the snow-capped Himalayan region. Depending on the needs of the final product, the entire ringal is divided into small strips with varying lengths for the warp (lengthwise yarns) and weft (crosswise yarns). The craftsman skillfully blends light and dark ringal strips to create one-of-a-kind designs. The edges of the final product are smoothed by scraping.
