THE CHALLENGE

  • The 100 metre section of the ‘PeriaOdai’ and the south main canal bank which had been breached during the 1972 floods was deeply scoured, affecting the 688.26 hectare Ayacut/Command area
  • Farmers in the Command area of the south main canal were not receiving sufficient water

THE SOLUTION

  • NABARD extended financial assistance under RIDF for construction of a 31.80 metre long dam with a narrow crested weir, abutment wing and return walls

THE IMPACT

  • Restoration of river bed to its original level
  • Replenishment of downstream wells
  • Availability of water for longer periods
  • Tangible effect on agricultural productivity
