Skill Development Initiative in Pisciculture

Beneficiaries:

Farmers in Kasargod district, Kerala

The Challenge:

  • Ignorance about scientific livelihood about pisciculture among the fishing community members
  • A general movement amongst the youth to move away from traditional farming and allied activities

The Solution:

  • NABARD brought unemployed youths together in the form of an NGO
  • Training on scientific fish culture imparted to fish farmers from Dimoria Block through the NGO
  • On site exposure visit organized to Fisheries college, Raha
  • Benefits of aggregation and joint marketing were highlighted to the youths

The Impact:

  • Fishermen today earn upto and over `1 lakh per annum, a virtual dream before the project
  • Pisciculture has encouraged the rural population to take up other allied activities like duck farming and piggery units more aggressively
  • Some progressive farmers have also combined pisciculture with rice production
