Initiative:

Farmers Clubs as tools for economic prosperity

Beneficiaries:

Farmers of Vellanad district, Kerala

The Challenge:

  • Inadequate returns from coconut and rubber production
  • Lack of forward and backward linkages
  • Educating and empowering farmers

The Solution:

  • NABARD sanctioned Rs 9 lakh for a pilot project on technology transfer, credit counselling and market advocacy through Farmers Clubs
  • SHGs were formed and farmers were trained in rubber tapping, beekeeping, nursery maintenance and kitchen gardening
  • An input centre was started for rubber farmers

The Impact:

  • Federation of Farmers Clubs formed with 53 member clubs
  • Commercial sale of local honey
  • Increase in coconut and latex production
  • Yearly turnover of input centre averages Rs 6.20 lakh
  • Clusters converted into registered Coconut Producers’ Society (CPS)
