THE CHALLENGE
Undulating land unsuitable for growing food grains
Traditional farming methods, meagre incomes and unmotivated farmers
Absence of access to processing facilities for crops such as pineapples and oranges
THE SOLUTION
NABARD sanctioned a project which supported on-farm activities
500 tribal families took up orchard development with orange as the main crop and pineapple as the intercrop
Soil conservation was encouraged in the form of contour cultivation of legume plants
Stress laid on water conservation and backyard poultry
THE IMPACT
The success of these farmers has motivated others to scale up cultivation of oranges and pineapples
Farmers have organised themselves into an FPO to benefit from the scale of production
