• Farmers and residents of Oddanchatram, Dindigul district, Tamil Nadu

THE CHALLENGE

• Large volumes of vegetable waste generated on a daily basis by 57 villages of Oddanchatram municipality
• High collection cost and dwindling financial resources to tackle the problem
• Absence of information about viable and sustainable waste disposal technology

THE SOLUTION

• NABARD extended assistance for scientific waste management to Kiruba Foundation
• Vegetable waste was converted into organic fertiliser through vermicomposting
• Capacity-building support was provided for ecology conservation and organic farming

THE IMPACT

• Nearly 30 per cent of the total vegetable garbage treated scientificall
• Around 80 metric tonnes of vermicompost marketed every year
• Farmers in the district have taken up organic farming
• A beacon project for other municipalities
