Building Water Communities
Madhya Pradesh

Initiative:

Establishing PPP model for drinking water supply

Beneficiaries:

457 villagers of Gopalpura Village, Jhansi District

The challenge:

A permanent solution to the drinking water problem faced by village communities

The solution:

  • Cover the village under NABARD’s Village Development Plan Scheme
  • Conceptualize and implement a Drinking Water Scheme in partnership with Arghyam Trust, an NGO and village community
  • Lay water supply pipe of 1240 meters with about 40 taps
  • Set up a committee for management, operation and maintenance of water supply

The impact:

  • Fresh and clean drinking water at the doorstep of every family
  • Villagers now have water supply, twice a day, at their doorsteps for a nominal payment of Rs. 18 per family, per month
  • Women don’t have to walk 2-3 kms a day to fetch drinking water
  • Improvement in health and sanitation
  • • A benchmark example for State Government & other villages for replication
