Revival of PACS

Beneficiaries:

Farm workers of Athani village, Thrissur district, Kerala

The Challenge:

• Peringandur Service Cooperative Bank, a PACS functioning in Athani village of Thrissur district, had mounting overdues, accumulated losses and declining borrowing members

The Solution:

• NABARD extended assistance of Rs 2 crore to the PACS for construction of Green Mythri, a rural supermarket
• A grant assistance of Rs 2.5 lakh was given for the creation of training infrastructure within the supermarket complex

The Impact:

• Green Mythri with an average daily turnover of about Rs 2 lakh serves nearly 750 customers; also offers online and SMS-based shopping options
• A specialist ‘Green Army’ of farm workers organised by the PACS regularly supplies home-grown fruits and vegetables to Green Mythri
• Fair and remunerative prices for the produce of SHGs and JLGs
