Mahoba Gaura Patthar Hastashlip

Mahoba's excellent Gaura stone artistry is well-known throughout the country. The brilliant white stone used in Gaura stonecraft is primarily found in this area. Owing to the soft texture of Gaura stone, it is divided into many parts, which are subsequently utilized to create a variety of decorative crafts.

The artform

Found only in the Gaurahari village, Gaura pathar is a bright natural stone. Using hammers and a chisel, the stone is meticulously shaped. It is then chemically treated and left in boiling water for a whole night before being carved. The artist draws a preliminary shape of the sculpture on the stone block before beginning to carve it. Sand or particles of carborundum are used for polishing as the last finishing touch.
