A significant hub for brass manufacturing is Mirzapur, in the state of Uttar Pradesh. The "Kasera" community, which produces brass household items, are the custodian of the traditional Mirzapur Pital Bartan industry.

The artform

After being cut to size and shape, the brass sheets are heated in a furnace and subsequently pounded with a hammer. After the sheets are heated, they are removed from the furnace and hammered, sometimes beating many sheets together in lots of two, four, or six. Now when the sheets are red with heat, they are once more placed in the furnace before being removed one at a time and set on the anvil. After that, they are hammered at various locations by rotating the template on the anvil; the template is changed in the furnace as soon as it becomes cold. The template has an outline of the article that needs to be created.
