Chunar Glaze Pottery

Chunar Glaze pottery is a one-of-a-kind and exclusive blend of glazing and terracotta applied on highly unusual red clay that is combined with soil from the nearby Chunar Pond and the Baluai Domat of the Ganga River.

The artform

Chunar glazed pottery is renowned for its two-step firing process. The first firing occurs after the pot is created and dried by fire in a traditional firing system. The potters then color the pots using various types of enamels and place them in the traditional furnace (bhatti) for a second firing. An even more complex variation involves creating a glossy surface with a unique powdered mixture known as "kabiz." The soil from a rice field is used to make this powder.
