This exquisite craft entailing carving of flowers, petals, creepers, and deity images into copper cooking utensils and vessels, dates back to the 16th century AD. Legend states that the ancient craft of Tamta originated when Chandravanshi clan from Rajasthan moved to the hill state of Champawat.
The artform
This intricate process begins with artisans drawing a circle using a compass on the metal sheet which is cut out from the rest of the sheet. The cut-out sheet is beaten with a hammer to give it a hemispherical shape, which forms the base of the vessel. Each part is made separately and then joined by soldering. The product is finally heated in a furnace before putting it to dry.
