The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) will soon submit a consolidated report to the District Administration on rejuvenating water bodies in villages.

According to the NABARD AGM here S.S. Vaseeharan, this is part of a nationwide campaign by the bank to create awareness on the need to conserve water, use different technologies to revive water bodies at village-level, and create farm-level infrastructure for better water management.

In Coimbatore district, the campaign was conducted in 228 village panchayats last month. A feedback session was held here on Monday.

Based on the feedback from the campaign, a report on water-related problems at the villages, immediate needs, and ways to meet them will be submitted to the district administration.

The project looks at not just tanks and ponds but also borewells that are not in use and check dams at village-level.

According to the feedback received, some of the major needs are de-silting water bodies and renovating very old check dams.

“In some places, the public do not even know that a check dam existed in a particular location,” he said.

These activities could be taken up using funds from various schemes of the Central and State Governments or even through Corporate Social Responsibility projects.

S. Srinath, Deputy General Manager of the bank, said the campaign was taken up in 6,500 villages in 16 districts across the State.

The project was done jointly with Centre for Environment Education.
