  • Undulating land unsuitable for growing food grains
  • Traditional farming methods, meagre incomes and unmotivated farmers
  • Absence of access to processing facilities for crops such as pineapples and oranges

THE SOLUTION

  • NABARD sanctioned a project which supported on-farm activities
  • 500 tribal families took up orchard development with orange as the main crop and pineapple as the intercrop
  • Soil conservation was encouraged in the form of contour cultivation of legume plants
  • Stress laid on water conservation and backyard poultry

THE IMPACT

  • The success of these farmers has motivated others to scale up cultivation of oranges and pineapples
  • Farmers have organised themselves into an FPO to benefit from the scale of production
