Sustainable and integrated dairy development

Beneficiaries:

Farmers of 159 villages in Hoshangabad district, Madhya Pradesh

The Challenge:

• Low-yield nondescript milch cows
• Farmers ignorant about new and improved dairy practices
• Inadequate marketing infrastructure

The Solution:

• Breed improvement was achieved through artificial insemination
• Farmers educated in modern dairy practices
• Formation of an Farmer Producer Organization (FPO) to address input- and output-related issues
• NABARD extended assistance for sustainable and integrated dairy development

The Impact:

• Increase in milk production by 9,000-10,000 metric tonnes per annum
• Increase in the availability of quality milch animals
• Establishment of forward and backward market linkages
• Formation of new Farmers Clubs
• Existing Farmers Clubs evolved into an FPO
