Development of Farmers Collectives

Beneficiaries:

Farmers in and around Chikkaballapur, Karnataka

The Challenge:

• A predominantly tribal area with very poor socio-economic conditions
• Poor average rainfall
• Marginal land holdings, degraded land and high levels of migration

The Solution:

• NABARD assisted the formation of Sri Gangadevi Grape Growers Club in association with Canara Bank
• Conduct of regular exposure visits and awareness programmes

The Impact:

• Significant acceptance of grape cultivation
• Organised marketing of produce with higher returns
• Intercropping and shift from traditional crops
• A Farm Input Supply Centre owned by farmers
• Enhanced economic status of farmers
