KOZHIKODE: Niravu Vengeri with the help of district administration and Centre for Water Resources Development and Management (CWRDM) organised a one—day workshop on cleaning drive of Poonoor river. The workshop was organised as part of the as part of Poonoor river rejuvenation project of the Niravu initiated under National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development's (NABARD) national wide water conservation campaign.

CWRDM executive director Dr E J Joseph inaugurated the workshop. CWRDM Geomantics division head Dr V P Dinesh presented scientific study report and guidelines on measures needs to be taken to protect the river from pollution. Action plan for Poonoor river cleaning was presented by Skill Development Centre director professor K Sreedharan on the occasion. Babu Parambath, Niravu project coordinator done a presentation on the cleaning drive of the river commenced on the origin of river at Kattippara during the occasion.


The workshop also assessed the review of the on-going action plan executing by the Niravu with the help of public in the 11 grama panchayats under the Poonoor river rejuvenation project. The project envisaged under the action plan of Niravu proposed under the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development's (NABARD) national wide water conservation campaign in 8000 villages in the country. Niravu is the implementing agency of NABARD scheme in Kozhikode district.

Niravu aims at setting up a model for the entire state that even dying river can be revamped with the joint support of government and public. Local level committees will be formed in the panchayat limits of Chakkittapara, Panagad, Unnikulam, Thamarassery ,Koduvally, Madavoor, Kunnamangalam, Kuriivattoor, Kakkodi and Kozhikode corporation to curb waste dumping on the river stretch. Corporation executive engineer K P Ramesh presided over the function. Irrigation executive engineer P Ajithkumar, heads of 11 grama panchayats, save Poonoor river forum representatives and others attended the workshop.
