Name of the Project: Climate Resilient Interventions in Dairy
Sector in Coastal and Arid Areas in Andhra Pradesh
Project Focus: Agriculture & Allied Sectors - Livestock
Location: Ananthapur, Nellore and Vizianagaram Districts of
           Andhra Pradesh
Project Finance: Rs. 12.71 Crore (USD 1.73 million)
Duration: 5 Years (2016-2021); Extended upto 2022; Ongoing
Name of Executing Entity: Department of Animal Husbandry,
           Government of Andhra Pradesh
Project Beneciaries: Direct: 5000 small and marginal farmers and
25 unemployed rural youth (as potential entrepreneurs)

Project Area: e State of Andhra Pradesh is historically prone to various extreme weather and climate related risks like
droughts, oods, heat waves, cold waves, hailstorms etc. which has been adversely aecting its economy. Andhra
Pradesh is ranked 7th in the country for milk production, which contributes 6.74% to the State GDP, and supports the
livelihood of about 36.68% rural households. Livestock rearing is an activity which is vulnerable to climate induced
extremes like heat stress, drought, cyclones, spread of tropical disease, etc. A rise of 2-6°C due to global warming
between 2050’s and 2080’s is projected to negatively impact growth, puberty and maturation of crossbred animals and
           bualoes.

           Studies carried out in Andhra
           Pradesh, indicates that small and
           marginal farmers can gain better
milk yields and better income from
their bovine stock if they gain access
to fodder from public land, and if
           bovine stock is provided
           drought-relief cattle camp to avoid
heat stress. In order to address these
           issues, the project adopts an
           integrated and ecosystem-based
           approach for enhancing the adaptive
           capacities of small and marginal
           farmers dependent on dairy sector
in drought and cyclone prone areas
of Andhra Pradesh in the light of Reduction in milk
           climate change. productivity

                                                          Recurring droughts and
                                                          fodder scarcity
