Name of the Project: Model Carbon Positive Eco-Village in
           Phayeng of Manipur
           Project Focus: Sustainable Agriculture
Location: Phayeng Village, Imphal West Region of Manipur
Project Finance: Rs. 10 Crore (USD 1.33 million)
           Duration: 3 years (2015-2018); Completed
Name of Executing Entity: Directorate of Environment,
           Govt. of Manipur
Project Beneciaries: 1,200 Households of the Phayeng village

Project Area: e state of Manipur is a part of vulnerable Himalayan Ecosystem with high reliance of locals on the
climate sensitive sectors i.e., forest, natural streams, lakes and primitive agriculture and animal husbandry. e state has
experienced an increase in minimum & maximum temperature during the last 100 years by ≥ 1.7°C and ≥ 1.5°C
respectively. Rainfall of the state has become erratic in nature and varied from 956.5 mm to 2268.9 mm annually during
the last 60 years. Future projections indicates that, temperature could rise by
1.7°C and rainfall by 15-19% in the mid-2030s in the state. Agriculture &
allied sectors have been reported as most climate sensitive sector in the
Indian Network on Climate Change Assessment (INCCA) Report.

e Phayeng Village located at the
foothill of Kangchup hill range of
Manipur has been facing the problem
of reduction in soil fertility due to
traditional slash and burn method of
           cultivation, deforestation, poor water
           runo management, and high
           dependency on only one perennial
           stream namely Maklang River. e
           village has poor employability and
           inadequate skilled manpower leading
to the distress migration. To address
           the above vulnerabilities, the given
project envisions to develop a model
carbon positive eco-village by blending Problem of
traditional and modern climate Water Scarcity
           adaptive practices for Agriculture &
           allied sectors to reduce vulnerability
           and enhance resilience of the
           traditional livelihood systems.
