Name of the Project: Climate Adaptation Strategies in Wetlands along
Mahanadi River Catchment areas in Chhattisgarh.
           Project Focus: Water Conservation

Location: Mahasamund, Raipur (Baloda Bazar), Dhamtari Districts of
           Chhattisgarh
Project Finance: Rs. 21.47 Crore (USD 2.86 million)
Duration: 4 Years (2016-2020); Extended upto 2022; Ongoing
Name of Executing Entity: State Centre for Climate Change, Aranya
           Bhavan, Raipur, Govt. of Chhattisgarh
Project Beneciaries: Total 8222 (3986 men and 4236 women)
farmers and wetland dependent communities along the Mahanadi
           River Catchment Area

Project Area: Chhattisgarh is a state with poor social and physical infrastructure and low social and human
development index. A total 7,711 wetlands have been mapped in the State and a 27,823 wetlands (< 2.25 ha) have also
been identied. e mean maximum temperature in the state has increased by 1.10 ºC whereas mean rainfall has
decreased @ 1.4385 mm per year from 1971-2013.

           e Mahanadi Basin which extends
over an area of 1,43, 441 Km2 has been
           facing drought and ood conditions
across its various parts leading to
           changes in the hydrological regime,
quantity and quality of water supply,
           vegetative cover, proliferation of exotic
species, etc. It is also facing
           anthropogenic pressures like
           unsustainable extraction of wetland
           resources, pollution, encroachment, etc.
e seasonal reduction in open water
spread from post monsoon to pre
monsoon season is observed to be about
4,611 ha, 8,044 ha, and 7,785 ha. for
           Mahasamund, Raipur (Baloda Bazar),
           and Dhamtari respectively of the
Mahanadi River Basin. To address the
           above vulnerabilities, the given project
envisions to facilitate the long term
restoration and management of Eutrophication of
           wetlands through promotion of Wetland
           sustainable agriculture, water
           conservation and demand management,
           resource harvesting, livelihood
           diversication, community Siltation and Reduced
participation, JFM initiatives, etc. Water Carrying Capacity
