Name of the Project: Towards Climate Resilient Livestock Production
System in Punjab
Project Focus: Animal Husbandry
Location: Ludhiana, Bhatinda and Tarn Taran Districts of Punjab
Project Finance: Rs. 17.40 Crore (USD 2.61 million)
Duration: 5 Years (2015-2020); Extended upto 2022; Ongoing
Name of Executing Entity: Punjab State Council for Science and
Technology, Government of Punjab
Project Beneciaries: 3,000 Nos of Small and Marginal farmers with
landholding of 1-2 ha and having 5-15 dairy animals
Project Area: e State of Punjab has been one of the front runners in white revolution and ranks 5th in milk production
amongst all the Indian states. Agriculture contributes about 19.89% to the states GDP and animal husbandry, including
dairy sector, contributing about 8.36%. Global warming is expected to reduce livestock production due to cattle
mortality, competition for limited fodder and water resources, pastureland degradation, and livestock diseases. With rise
in temperature and humidity, there is a likelihood of increase in incidence of animal diseases (bacterial, protozoan and
viral) that are spread by insects and vectors. Frequency and incidence of mastitis and foot & mouth diseases
aecting crossbred cows and other high milk producers. e disease incidence may increase due to
increase in the number of stressful days. As per India's communication to United Nations
Framework Convention on Climate Change, a rise in temperature by 2 to 4°C by
2050 will cut milk production by more than 15 million tons.
e project envisions to ensure
sustainable levels of livestock
production through scientic
interventions, assisted reproductive
technologies, environment-friendly
housing and measures for timely
detection and control of animal and
zoonotic diseases.
